The Newborn Bubble

Survival, sleep and finding your feet

If you’ve found this page, you’re likely awaiting the arrival of your newborn or you’re in the early days with your precious little one. Welcome to the wonderful, wild world of parenthood.

Navigating life with a newborn can feel like a minefield. You leave the hospital, step out into the world with your baby, and suddenly it feels like you’re expected to just get on with it and know what to do. That’s certainly how I felt. Add in advice from family, friends and social media, and it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information coming your way.

But here’s the truth: as long as you’re following safe sleep guidelines, there is no right or wrong way to care for your new baby.

Many of us spend months preparing the nursery, choosing tiny outfits, researching prams and debating car seats. Yet very few people talk about newborn sleep — or the little things we can do to support healthy sleep habits from the start.

Some useful pointers for navigating newborn sleep:

  • Routine isn’t the goal yet. In the early days, you are finding your feet, your baby will sleep, wake to feed, and drift back off again. Enjoy the rhythm while it lasts. BUT a gentle bedtime routine, even early on, can still be helpful.

  • Create an optimum sleep environment. Just like us, babies sleep best in a calm, comfortable and safe space.

  • Understand quiet and active sleep. Newborns can be noisy, wriggly sleepers. Knowing when to step in — and when to let them resettle — makes a big difference.

  • Help them learn day from night. Supporting their developing circadian rhythm is one of the simplest ways to encourage more settled nights.

  • A nap is a nap. Whether naps take place in the car, in a pram, in your arms or in their sleep space, it really doesn’t matter. What matters is the nap happening and baby and you resting in whatever way works best that day.

If you’d like to explore any of these areas in more depth and learn how to nurture your newborn with confidence, you’re welcome to book a free 15-minute discovery call here. It’s a gentle space to ask questions and feel supported.
